Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina is full of RICH history. It is named after Mostari (bridge keepers) who guarded the Stari Most (old bridge) in the medieval times. The old bridge runs over the Neretva River and was built in the 16th century. The Stari Most is Bosnia and Hersegovina’s most popular landmark and one of the most admirable objects of the Islamic architecture.
The old bridge had stood for 427 years but during the Croat-Bosniak War it was destroyed, November 9, 1993, by the Croat military forces. The current bridge was rebuilt and opened July 23, 2004.
Getting There:
Tours: Many day tours come from Dubrovnik, Croatia or from the Capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Sarajevo and from Medjugorie to explore Mostar.
Cars: Renting a car in any of those cities and driving yourself works great to get to explore Mostar.
We had rented a car from Dubrovnik and drove to Mostar, then back to Split.

Kravica Falls:
This magical place is the best way to spend the morning. Kravica falls are a large waterfall cascade on the Trevizat River, nearing 80 feet in height. Swimming is a must and the best place is in the 390ft lake at the base of the waterfall. Cliff jumping happens often, but takes careful navigating while climbing to the top of the rocks as they get very slippery.
Kravica Falls is 40km (25 miles) from Mostar. Again, can take a tour or drive yourself. Miles of winding roads and plentiful hills, tourists will arrive in a large parking lot. If parking a car, price is 8 EUROs for 2 people and a car. Otherwise, 3 EUROs per person (prices from 2016).
Once parked, there is a 5-10 minutes walk down a hill. About 3/4 of the way down you will begin to see the most breathtaking site: Kravica Falls. At the bottom you will see a little cafe, a place to picnic, some sand and a lot of people. Going early in the morning will decrease the tourists some, but Kravica Fall is a must see.
Swim, jump off rocks and enjoy the time spent by the water.
Keep in mind: Kravica Falls is only open May-October.
Free Walking Tour to explore Mostar History
After a fun morning at the Kravica Falls, time to learn all about Mostar. Utilizing free walking tours are the best thing to do in any town, but especially Mostar. The free walking tour is a wonderful way to learn about the history of the town. Most of the history guests will learn is about the war in the early 1990s. It is still fresh on the minds of Mostar citizens and very evident with some of their buildings.
Run down buildings and bullet holed walls are left to the eye, a somber remembrance of the war and what should never be again.
Stari Most
The tour ends at the Old Bridge (Stari Most). At the bridge, men will bargain for money to jump off the bridge, when they feel they have made enough money they dive off landing in the Neretva River below. This is a popular attraction, but its the views that ‘wow’ the tourist.
War Photo Exhibition
If history is your thing, the War Photo Exhibition is the place to visit next. Very quiet once inside, the exhibition features photos from war zones in various counties in the lower level and dedicated to the Yugoslav war (1990s) on the upper floor. 3 EUROs to enter.
Old Bazar Kujundziluk
The cobblestone shopping sidewalk of downtown Mostar. At the Old Bazar Kujundziluk, tourists will find plenty of local shops or knock off designer items. Walk around, buy from a local and enjoy the socializing of the community.
Koskin-Mehmed Pasha’s Mosque
A block off the Old Bazar Kujundziluk, tourist will find the Koskin-Mehmed Pasha’s Mosque. With a 3 EURO entrance fee, stepping into the adjacent garden is stunning. Obviously, tourist aren’t allowed during prayer times but welcome any other time. No need to remove your shoes or ladies to cover their heads.
Dinner
It needs to be by the bridge overlooking the water and Old Bridge. There are plenty of restaurants and you won’t be disappointed. The picture explains all.
